Rooted & Resilient - Guide

What is this

A simple, one-activity program you can do with your kid(s) this weekend in your backyard, a park, or even by a window. No prep needed. Just you and nature (or a plant).

Ages: 5-14
Time: 60-90 minutes total
Setting: Outdoors (best) or indoors near plants/window
Materials: Nothing required

Your child breathes in oxygen that trees made for them. They breathe out carbon dioxide that trees need. They are literally breathing with trees and everyone else.

Your Game Plan

  1. Read the material (5 min)

  2. Do the Breath Exchange activity (20 min) — Show your kid(s) the connection

  3. Walk around observing (20-30 min) — Look for animals, plants, notice the system

  4. Teach the Tree Breath (10-15 min) — A calming breathing practice

  5. Practice together (10-15 min) — Do it 3-5 times, feel the difference

Part 1: The Breath Exchange (20 minutes)

Step 1: Stand next to a tree (or a plant, or look out a window at one)

Step 2: Put your hand on the tree and notice that the tree is alive, just like you. Right now, it's breathing. And so are you.

Step 3: Take one slow breath together. You just breathed in oxygen this tree made. And the air you breathed out? The tree needs that.

Step 4: Can you feel how connected you are to this tree? It's not separate from you. You're breathing together.

Part 2: Look for the Whole System (20 minutes)

Now take a walk (or sit and observe if you're limited on space).

What to Point Out

As you walk, point out:

"See that bird? It's breathing oxygen from plants, just like you."

"Those insects are breathing with the plants too."

"That dog (or squirrel, butterfly, etc.):  it needs oxygen from trees to live."

"All of us, people, animals, insects,  we're all breathing because of plants. We're all connected."

The Big Picture

"Your breath isn't just your breath. It's part of a huge system that includes trees, animals, plants, insects, and people all over the world. You're not alone. You're part of something much bigger."

Part 3: Tree Breath (10 minutes)

Sit comfortably (on the ground, a bench, doesn't matter). If outdoors, have them face a tree.

Count together:

  1. Breathe IN slowly (count to 4): "Breathing in oxygen from the trees"

  2. Hold (count to 4): "This oxygen is becoming part of me"

  3. Breathe OUT slowly (count to 4): "Breathing out carbon dioxide for the trees"

  4. Hold (count to 4): "I'm breathing with the trees"

Repeat 5-7 times (about 5 minutes)

I am breathing with the trees. Trees are breathing with me. I am rooted. I am connected. I am never alone.

Part 4: Practice together

Do it one more time, all together!
